Auditions, TheatreFest 2013

Dusty Davidson, TETA
Auditions Coordinator

Now that summer is over and SummerFest has passed, we are all looking forward to TheatreFest 2013 in Houston this year. It is hard to believe that it is time to start registering and getting ready for auditions again. It seems like we have just finished wrapping up the 2012 auditions. The good news is that there will be no changes in the audition process at TETA this next year. We were very fortunate to have a great space, a great group of volunteers, and a great process put into place by Jackie deMontmollin over the last several years. The process ran very smoothly and we received positive feedback in the process so our goal is to keep things the way they are. So barring any major problems, our expectation is to have the tech auditions on Friday evening, acting/singing auditions on Saturday morning, with all callbacks (tech and acting/singing) on Saturday afternoon.

For tech auditions, we will again have photocopies of the audition forms of these students so that college and university tech representatives will not have to carry laptops around to each student. Of course, representatives are welcomed to do so if they choose. We highly encourage each design student participating in the tech auditions to register for DesignFest as well. Such incredible work is being presented during the auditions and it would be extremely beneficial and educational for the students auditioning and for younger students interested in design to see this great work.

Now there is something that has changed that will impact the Institutional Member school representatives, in particular, that will be in effect per the Finance Committee & Convention Director for TheatreFest 2013. There will be a $50 late fee for College & University Institutional Member Reps who fail to submit their paperwork before the December 1st deadline and/or arrive at convention wanting to participate in auditions. This is added incentive to get paperwork and fees taken care of ahead of the December 1st deadline. After the deadline, the late fee will need to be included with all other registration paperwork and convention fees. Please be aware of this important change and plan accordingly.

Additionally, we hope (with no guarantee) to send out by email the PDF of the audition books to representatives ahead of time for those wishing to study the audition forms more thoroughly before the auditions. This would also allow colleges and universities who wish to have printed materials to print them out themselves and avoid the additional expense of the printed books, which we are hoping to phase out over the next few years. There will still be one USB drive per school containing the audition book available at the auditions as there has been in the past.

For students participating in the auditions and their directors, we continue to encourage you to get your paperwork in earlier rather than later. The earlier you begin the process and begin audition work the better prepared, more confident, and more successful your audition will be. Look for the next audition article for helpful hints and advice for a successful audition as well as some key information in regard to the auditions.

As always, the other volunteers and I are here to help you in any way we can. Feel free to contact me for any questions or concerns at: davidsondusty@hotmail.com.
