C/U Opportunities at TheatreFest 2015

Greetings fellow College and University Theatre Educators,
It’s an exciting time to be a part of TETA and the College/University section.  As you may know, we are planning for TheatreFest 2015 – “Together Toward Tomorrow.” We will be meeting in Houston again, January 29–February 1 at the Hyatt Regency.  I hope to see you all there!

I wanted to share with you some of the exciting opportunities for C/U at TheatreFest.

-       C/U Special Guest – Brittany Ayers from the Eugene O’Neill Theatre Center/National Theatre Institute.  She will be presenting workshops on voice and movement, as well as sharing with educators about the O’Neill study-away semesters and other ways the O’Neill center can benefit your college program.  These workshops are designed for C/U Faculty.

-       TETA Symposium – Dr. DeAnna Toten-Beard from Baylor University will be our guest speaker as we kick off this new part of TETA.  She will be addressing the importance of research and academic writing in theatre.

-       Teacher Training Network – In order to connect our schools educating future theatre teachers, we will be hosting a networking event aimed at getting your theatre education students connected with K-12 educators and administrators.

-       Institutional Membership – As you may know, your school may register as an Institutional Member [IM] of TETA.  We will be hosting a gathering of IM schools and those considering becoming an IM.  We want to hear from you concerning how TETA Institutional Membership can be improved, as well as share with you our future IM plans.

-       DesignFest & PlayFest  These two sub-festivals of TheatreFest are open to both student and faculty presentations.  Registration forms may be found on the TETA website.

-       Auditions/Interviews/Callbacks – As in the past, we will be having High School and Junior College designer and acting auditions.  We realized that with the lateness of the TETA auditions (in comparison to Thespians and other auditions in the fall) it becomes increasingly more important for C/U representatives to start recruiting Juniors.  So, new for this year, we are allowing more Juniors to audition for scholarships.

-       Workshops! – as always, TheatreFest will have a lot of workshops geared to theatre educators.  We’re still compiling the list for these, and if you have a great one to present we might be able to get it in there.  These workshops are a great way to learn new techniques and network with other educators.  Also, presenting at TheatreFest is good for your CV!!  Go here - https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1SCEMfs-ftR0d3ZvwdAdawXej1rk9fc_Gw6zLGR0L-OE/viewform to submit a workshop proposal!

I hope you are excited by these upcoming events at TheatreFest.  In addition to these items, we are also working to revamp the College/University section leadership.  Currently we have a C/U Chair (formerly known as a Vice President of C/U), a Chair elect, and a secretary.  We desire to have more C/U involvement in planning to gain input from a wider audience.  We will be expanding the C/U leadership to include a Junior/Community College representative and a College/University representative.  If serving in one of these positions sounds like something that interests you, please let me know.

Finally, many of you know that TETA has been going through some big changes in the last year.  I want to assure you that the current Board of Directors is working diligently to make TETA an organization in which you can be proud of, participate in, and share your passion for theatre education with others.  If there is anything that concerns you regarding TETA, or if you have a suggestion for our continued improvement, please do not hesitate to contact me at cu.chair@tetatx.com.  I look forward to hearing from you and seeing you at TheatreFest in January.

Mike Burnett
College/University Chair – TETA
