TETA is Catching Fire!

Sara A. Schochler
TETA Board of Directors
Vice President K-12 Committee

Before I begin sharing with everyone my excitement for SummerFest 2014, I want to take this opportunity to express my thoughts on TheatreFest 2014. Since 2008, I’ve been able to experience a little of what happens “behind the scenes” at TheatreFest. Members of the K-12 Committee usually present workshops, “man” the K-12 Table and answer questions from members while promoting SummerFest, attend interest and business meetings for K-12, and maybe help out around the registration or exhibits areas is someone needs help.

The months, weeks and days leading up to TheatreFest 2014 were stressful to say the least for many people. There was a major transition within our organization just 8 days before convention. There was a lot of work to be done!

I had the honor and privilege of working alongside my Keller ISD Fine Arts Director, Kim Blann, Lewisville Fine Arts Coordinator, Missey Head, and Jackie DeMontmillon from The University of Houston Department of Theatre. Early in the week of convention, we worked either in Kim’s KISD office or at the hotel in Dallas also with Terri Castleberry from Waco on registration, hotel accommodations, programming and presenters. I also remember several conference calls with JE Masters about exhibitors. This group of people made TheatreFest 2014 a huge success. In fact, there were MANY volunteers who recognized a need, took extra time, and were ready to work. Thank you to Cathy Huvar, K’Lynn Childress, Ricky Ramon, Jenae Glanton, Stephanie Ball, Dwayne and Rhonda Craig, and the TETA Board of Directors (I know I’m probably leaving out some people!J). All these folks are driven, passionate about TETA, committed to serving the membership in the spirit of professional transparency, and definitely not afraid of a lot of hard work. Thank you to Kim, Missey, Jackie, Terri and JE for showing me what “behind the scenes” at TheatreFest is really about.

I hope to see you at TETA SummerFest 2014 July 25-27 at McMurry University. You can RSVP and join our mailing list by going to the amazing new TETA website and finding the SummerFest tab. You can also submit a Workshop Proposal there as well. What kinds of workshops are we looking for? Teachers at SummerFest enjoy “hands-on” style workshops (more active and less “lecture”). We want to “get up and DO!” instead of “sit and listen.” Other requests have been more make-up and theatre tech-related workshops, pantomime, elementary, and a UIL “crash course” for rookies. Michael Burnett, the VP of C/U, and I are collaborating and want to include more C/U presenters for SummerFest. We’re going to repeat more workshops that typically have more attendees or participants, have larger classrooms with tables (and sinks!), and…there is free Wi-Fi on the McMurry campus! Yes!

Online preregistration for SummerFest will be available VERY soon. Methods of payment for Early-Bird Preregistration ($90) will be credit card or school check. Register early so you can receive a free SummerFest Catching Fire T-shirt! Deadline is June 15th. Methods of payment for Onsite Registration ($120) will be Credit Card, Cash or School Check.

I am so excited to work with this K-12 Committee! We have several new, hard-working members, and here’s how you can get in touch with them!

I truly hope to see you in Abilene this summer. I promise that the K-12 Committee will do everything they can to make it the BEST SummerFest yet! We’re fired up! Come to McMurry University July 25-27 to discover and ignite your spark for theatre, for directing and for learning! Have a marvelous spring!
