On behalf of the TETA Board of Directors and the convention staff, I would like to encourage each of you to register and attend TheatreFest 2016. TheatreFest will take place January 28-31 at the Hyatt Regency Dallas-Reunion Tower.
As part of our ongoing efforts to create memorable and meaningful convention experiences, our staff is working tirelessly to ensure that TheatreFest 2016 is an enormous success. This year’s celebration will focus on the theme “Dream Big, Make Magic, and Make a Difference.” We are living in a time of unprecedented change. Our ability to connect and impact one another is vastly different. In an ever-changing world, we need to work together to create new ideas and develop new strategies to make a difference in not only ourselves, but also in those we teach. TheatreFest 2016 will provide the very tools we will need to Dream Big and Make Magic.
Please make plans to join our official “kickoff” and welcome to TheatreFest 2016 by attending the convocation. Joaquin Zihuatanejo, an American slam poet and teacher, will be our keynote speaker, and Mike Doocy, sports anchor for FOX 4 News, will serve as the Master of Ceremonies. Joaquin appeared on HBO's Def Poetry Jam and won both the 2008 Individual World Poetry Slam and the 2009 World Cup of Poetry Slam. Joaquin is known as “one of the most dynamic and passionate performance poets in the country, melding equal parts comedy, poetry, and dramatic monologue into a crowd-pleasing display of verbal fireworks…always thrilling.” Mike Doocy, a brilliant journalist and iconic sportscaster, delivers the nightly sports news at 5, 6, 9 and 10, anchors "Sports Sunday," a weekly 30 minute broadcast, and a number of sports specials throughout the year. Convocation will also include musical performances from area middle and high schools, recognition of the TETA awards recipients, and a brief introduction to our Board of Directors and Convention Staff.
Greg Arp, Programming Chair, has done an amazing job coordinating and organizing opportunities for professional development and training focused on a wide variety of topics appropriate for all levels. Jackie DeMontmollin, Special Guest Chair, has been working for months recruiting and contracting Special Guests. Jackie has done a fantastic job securing the best theatre educators and artists in the nation to address the training needs requested through membership surveys. Please look for articles from both Greg and Jackie announcing the amazing line-up of workshops and guests artists.
Make plans to attend the annual TETA Awards Ceremony. This year’s ceremony will look different from those from years past. Kim Blann and Gloria McLuckie, Awards Committee Co-Chairs have done an amazing job redesigning the format for the entire ceremony. Kim has dedicated numerous hours to creating a special experience for our awards recipients and attendees, and Gloria has done an incredible job with communication, and the nomination and selection process. Kim and Gloria are to be commended for providing a lovely event honoring those who make a difference in the lives of so many. If you have not purchased a ticket for the ceremony, please go to the TETA website and access the Awards Ceremony link.
TheatreFest 2016 will include a variety of workshops, production opportunities, talent shows, receptions, “walk-up workshops,” and networking. We are excited to announce that entries for DesignFest and PlayFest have quadrupled from past years, and interest in the UIL Film workshops continues to grow.
Hopefully, you and your students will take advantage of the wonderful activities presented at TheatreFest 2016. By dreaming big, we can make a difference in an ever-changing world.
“Magic is happening at TheatreFest! Don’t delay…register now! https://tetatx.wildapricot.org/event-1873170/Registration”
