Writing Curriculum?

Laura Y. Haygood
Curriculum Committee Chair

CURRICULUM FOR CURRENT TEKS HAS BEEN COMPLETED
Many districts have asked teachers to write curriculum for their courses.  With all we do, this can be a daunting task.  You may find that there is help from TETA.  The TETA Curriculum Committee worked for several years to evaluate the TEKS for all grade levels and align curriculum to them.  The completed document states enabling objectives for each TEK and lists suggested activities for each objective.
This is an excellent tool for new teachers.  More experienced teachers may find new ideas to refresh old curriculum.  This document will also help us develop some consistency in Theatre curriculum across the state, without inhibiting personal style.  The document can be found on the TETA website, but it is a little hard to find.  Go to the main menu and hover over committees.  A list of the committees will appear.  Scroll down to Curriculum and click.  On this page you will see the label: Curriculum Guide and a list of grade levels.  Click on a grade level and you will find the TEKS and aligned curriculum for that level.  Feel free to utilize information from this document for curriculum in your district.

Another consideration is the upcoming revision of TEKS.  TEA has established Fine Arts TEKS review committees which should begin meeting this fall.  The committees will review and revise the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for all grade levels and report to the State Board of Education.  Two TETA Curriculum Committee members will be serving on the committees.  Feel free to approach the committee with comments, concerns and suggestions as we go through this important process.
