TETA Update - A Word From the President

Marion Castleberry
TETA Board of Directors
President / CEO

Greetings! I hope everyone had a great Spring. The UIL One-Act Play season was terrific and many of my fellow adjudicators expressed that the work this year was some of the best they had ever seen. Like them, I was very impressed with the quality of performances, and I was encouraged to have seen so many students, parents, and teachers committed to educational theatre in Texas. I was impressed with the talent I observed this year and so very honored to have had the opportunity to work with many of our directors and young actors in the state. Congratulations to all the companies who participated this year. I hope all your experiences were rewarding and memorable.

The other good news is that TETA continues to be strong and vital and moving forward in numerous ways. On June 7th and 8th, the Board of Directors, along with David and Pam Meyercord, met to examine the organization’s Bylaws and Manual of Operations, to discuss the duties and responsibilities of non-profit board members, to further develop our online communication resources, find better ways to reach the membership, and to continue the planning of the 2015 TheatreFest in Houston. The retreat, which was held at Baylor University, was a very rewarding two days of renewal and planning.

Jerry Ivins and Missey Head have agreed to be Co-Convention Directors for 2015 TheatreFest and they are putting together an exciting and meaningful event. Jerry, Missey, and the Board of Directors have discussed ways of involving more people in the process, providing more opportunities for people to share their expertise with the membership, and using the convention as a way of reconnecting with the past while looking forward to TETA’s bright future. Jerry and Missey have a monumental task before them and I know that they would appreciate your help in making this one of the most significant conventions in the history of TETA. Texas is fortunate to have some of the most talented artists and practitioners in the country and we want you all to feel at home in our organization. Please find a way to lend your support, and do plan to attend TheatreFest 2015.

I also strongly urge you to attend this year’s SummerFest 2015 which will take place in Abilene, Texas, at McMurry University on July 25-27. Sara Schochler and others, have been very busy organizing the event, which promises to be extremely rewarding and entertaining. I hope you will all attend.

In addition to these activities, the TETA board of directors continues to support the adjudicator organization. And I can report that the new Texas Theatre Adjudicators and Officials is doing well and looking forward to embracing all of the new changes coming to UIL next year. AO leadership met in June to begin finalizing the new organization’s bylaws and to formulate the timeline for completing the 501 3C process. They also conducted a successful certification workshop in conjunction with the 4A State contest in Austin. Anyone interested in Adjudicator Certification should contact Travis Springfield at tspringf@houstonisd.org.

Before closing, I would like to thank David and Pam Meyercord for their support over the past several months. Their help has been invaluable. I also want to thank Rachel Mattox for her dedication to TETA and for her willingness to take on the position of CFO during such a difficult time in the organization’s history. You will be happy to know that during the last few months she has been relentless in her attempt to right the financial ship of TETA and to create an atmosphere of transparency that will serve as a model for years to come. I feel extremely honored to work by her side. Thanks Rachel for your hard work and honesty.

I would like to thank you all for your commitment to educational theatre and to your undying devotion to the young people of Texas. If any of you have suggestions for improving the aforementioned events or ways to strengthen TETA, please do not hesitate to contact me at president.ceo@tetatx.com
